Griffo, Brindisi again sponsoring Summer Reading Challenge
Summer Reading Challenge encourages children to read during the summer months; participants will be awarded an Excellence in Reading certificate
‘Libraries Rock’ is the theme of the 2018 Summer Reading Challenge sponsored by State Senator Joseph Griffo and Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi.
Participants in Brindisi’s reading challenge are asked to read a book for a minimum of 15 minutes a day for at least 40 days during July and August, either on their own or with a ‘reading buddy.’ They can use books on the suggested reading list or books of their own.
When participants have completed 40 days or more of reading, they can submit their calendar by mail or online to Brindisi’s office, and they will receive an ‘Excellence in Reading’ certificate from Brindisi. Brochures with information on the program, including a suggested reading list and a calendar to keep track of the days children read are available from Brindisi’s district offices, or online at nyassembly.gov/write/upload/member_files/119/pdfs/20180510_81442.pdf.
Those wishing to take part in Griffo’s reading challenge can do so by visiting www.nysenate.gov/nyread. Participants choose at least three books to read this summer and fill out an online reading journal to keep track of their progress. Children who submit a completed journal will receive a Certificate of Achievement from Griffo. Hard copies of the material are available upon request.
“With so many wonderful books out there just waiting to be discovered, reading during the summer is a great time for children to stay engaged, to learn and to enjoy their break from school,” Griffo said. “Children are encouraged once again to participate in my Summer Reading Program so that they can experience the joy of reading.”
“Reading over the summer months has long been proven to be a great way for students to stay engaged in learning, and to continue the progress they have made during the school year,” Brindisi said. “I encourage students and their families to get involved this summer and take the Summer Reading Challenge.”
