Speak Out Central New York joins health care workers from 1199SEIU, Citizen Action and others to rally against Tenney’s votes to raise insurance premiums

Because of Tenney’s vote to pass the TrumpTax, New York insurance rates will jump by double-digits in 2019

Speak Out Central New York, 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East and Central New York Citizen Action will rally from 4 to 5 p.m. at Genesee street and Memorial Parkway, Utica, today (June 21, 2018) to protest votes taken by Congresswoman Claudia Tenney that are raising their insurance premiums.

On the six-month anniversary of the TrumpTax passing, Central New Yorkers are remembering Tenney’s vote for the tax scam, which helped repeal the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate and is expected to drive average insurance rate hikes of $572 for individuals. New York insurers are already requesting an average rate increase of 24 percent for 2019.

Tenney voted for the TrumpTax, and its repeal of the individual mandate, even though health care experts across the country – including President Trump’s own former Health & Human Services Secretary – warned congressional Republicans that the bill would raise premiums. Now, as rich corporations rake in billions in tax breaks, working families across Central New York will be faced with even higher insurance premiums (some New York insurers have requested rate increases as high as 38.6 percent for 2019 already).

In addition, a coalition of Republican-led states is now attempting to use the repeal of the individual mandate to overturn other critical patient protections, potentially endangering the coverage of millions of Americans and nearly 600,000 Central New Yorkers who suffer from pre-existing conditions.

Tenney’s vote for the TrumpTax was a vote to reward the rich at the expense of her own constituents, opening up a $1.5 trillion hole in the deficit while endangering access to affordable health care for millions.
