(Morrisville, NY – Oct. 9, 2014) The Morrisville State College athletic department has named sophomore Byron Evans (Cazenovia, N.Y.) and junior Jeffrey Hado (Tema Ghana) the Mustang Co-Athletes of the Week for the week ending October 5.

Evans paced the men’s cross country team to a second place overall finish at the Cazenovia College Homecoming Invitational on Saturday. At the 8K invitational, Evans crossed the finish line in 29:13, finishing second overall in individual standings, a mere seven seconds behind the invitational champion from LeMoyne.

The sophomore ran a mile pace of 5:53 on the day.

An automotive technology major at Morrisville State, Evans is the son of Merry and Jim Evans of Cazenovia.

Hado-MOR-MSO-2013Hado was instrumental to a 2-0 week for the men’s soccer team, as they improved to 10-2 overall on the season, and remained atop the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) standings with a 6-1 conference record.

In the midweek contest against Utica College, Hado registered his first score of the year, a one-timer that proved to be the game winner as the Mustangs topped the Pioneers in non-conference action.

Later in the week, his play was critical in the midfield as Morrisville State upended Route 20 rival Cazenovia, 2-1, to remain in first place in conference action.

The junior is a graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High and is majoring in business administration at Morrisville State. He is the son of Veronica and Jacob Hado of Bronx.

 

Greenawalt Named Patriot Rookie of Week

(Hamilton, NY – Oct. 13, 2014) Alex Greenawalt is Colgate’s first Patriot League Rookie of the Week award winner in 2014.

The Erie, Pennsylvania, wide receiver set personal game highs with five catches for 103 yards and a touchdown Saturday as Colgate rallied past Princeton, 31-30. Greenawalt’s 24-yard TD reception late in the first half narrowed a 16-point Princeton lead to 23-14 and jump-started the Raider fortunes.

Greenawalt posted receptions of 24, 26 and 24 (TD) in the second quarter alone from quarterback Jake Melville, and then added catches of 21 and 8 after halftime to complete his breakout performance. Colgate as a team passed for 303 yards to blow past the previous season high of 159 set against Holy Cross.

Greenawalt for the season leads the Raiders with two receiving touchdowns and a 14.3-yard average per catch. He is third in both receptions with 11 and receiving yards with 157.

Honorable Mention: Melville and safety Mike Armiento didn’t quite receive the votes to earn Patriot League Player of the Week awards, but they did pick up honorable mention.

Melville had a career passing day, completing 23-of-32 for 303 yards and three touchdowns. The Sparta, New Jersey, sophomore is completing 61.2 percent of his passes for the season, with 888 yards and five touchdowns against just two interceptions.

Armiento intercepted his second pass in as many weeks and sparked the Raiders’ second-quarter rally. His interception and 56-yard return helped Colgate score 14 points in the final 52 seconds of the first half to close the Princeton lead that had been 16 to just two heading into the break.

The interception was Armiento’s 14th career, moving the Fort Lauderdale, Florida, senior into sole possession of third place on the Colgate chart. He also chipped in eight tackles and three additional pass breakups.

Johnson, Deese recognized by NJAC as Players of the Week

(Morrisville, NY – Oct. 14, 2014) The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) announced its football players of the week for the week ending October 12, naming Morrisville State senior quarterback Lemar Johnson (Ossining, N.Y.) the Offensive Player of the Week, and freshman corner Anthony Deese (Brooklyn, N.Y.) the Defensive Rookie of the Week for their performances in the conference win over Kean.

JohnsonL14 Johnson earns NJAC Offensive Player of the Week accolades for a third time this season, after assisting the Mustangs to a 3-0 conference record with the 37-31 defeat of Kean on Saturday.

In the contest, he completed 26-of-38 passes for 302 yards and two touchdowns, and posted a team high 129 yards rushing on 17 attempts, a 7.6 yard per carry average. Johnson also added a rushing score to his tallies on the day, as he registered 431 of the team’s 592 total yards of offense in the victory.

The senior is a graduate of Ossining High and is the reigning NJAC Offensive Player of the Year. He is majoring in criminal justice at Morrisville State and is the son of Esther Barrett of Ossining.

DeeseA14Deese earns NJAC Defensive Rookie of the Week honors for a second time this season, after helping Morrisville State remain unbeaten in conference play with the victory over Kean.

In the contest, Deese registered his first collegiate interception late in the fourth quarter which he returned 17 yards into Kean territory to set up the Mustangs game-winning touchdown drive in the closing minutes of the contest.

Deese currently has five passes defended on the season, ranking 11th overall in the conference.

The freshman is a graduate of Grand Street Campus and is majoring in business administration at Morrisville State.

Morrisville State currently tops the NJAC with a 3-0 conference mark, and sit 5-1 overall as they head into the weekend’s action against conference defending champion Rowan University.

Morrisville State’s Johnson named to D3football.com Team of the Week

3K (Morrisville, NY – Oct. 14, 2014) Morrisville State College senior quarterback, Lemar Johnson (Ossining, N.Y.) has been named to the D3football.com Team of the Week, presented by Scoutware, for his performance in the win over Kean University on Saturday.

Johnson completed 26-of-38 passes for 302 yards passing, and two touchdowns in the 37-31 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) win on Saturday. He added a team high 129 yards rushing on 17 carries for a score, one that came on fourth down and included a hurdle over a safety into the end zone for the go-ahead tally early in the fourth quarter.

Johnson averaged 7.6 yards per carry and 7.9 yards per pass attempt on the day, accounting for 431 of the team’s 592 yards total offense.

The senior is the reigning NJAC Offensive Player of the Year, and to date has posted several pre-season and in-season acknowledgements, including USA Football Division III and BSN Preseason All-American honors, NJAC Offensive Player of the Week accolades, and Corvias ECAC Southeast Player of the Week awards.

Johnson is currently ranked ninth overall in all of Division III in passing touchdowns (17) and is 23rd in passing yards (1,489). He ranks second in points responsible for (150), and is 25th overall in rushing with 598 yards.

He holds an eighth overall ranking nationally in total offense to date on the season, averaging 347.8 yards per game for the Mustangs, who rank 18th overall in all of Division III in total offense with a 504.5 yard per game average.

A graduate of Ossining High, Johnson is majoring in criminal justice at Morrisville State. He is the son of Esther Barrett of Ossining.

Larkin, Johnson named Co-Mustang Athletes of the Week

(Morrisville, NY – Oct. 15, 2014) The Morrisville State College athletics department has named junior Rob Larkin (Clinton, N.Y.) and senior Lemar Johnson (Ossining, N.Y.) the co-Mustang Athletes of the Week for the week ending October 12.

Larkin-MOR-MSO-2013 Larkin, posted a 1-0 victory in net for the men’s soccer team on Wednesday last week against Wells College behind his three save performance, leading Morrisville State to an 11-2 overall record, and 7-1 conference mark.

The win was Larkin’s third shutout of the season, and the 11th of his career. His three saves moved him into second all-time in saves (216) recorded in the Mustang history books.

Larkin has tallied a 10-1 record for the Mustangs (11-2 overall) between the pipes this season, registering just 34 saves and seven goals against behind the stingy defensive unit, while boasting an 0.75 goals against average (a North Eastern Athletic Conference low).

His play has led Morrisville State to a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) East Regional Ranking for four straight weeks, most recently moving up to seventh.  He ranks 50th overall in all of Division III in goals against average.

The junior is a graduate of Clinton High School and is majoring in residential construction at Morrisville State. He is the son of Shannon and Robert Larkin of Clinton.

In the win, Johnson registered 302 yards passing on 26-of-38 completions for two touchdown scores, adding another 129 yards on 17 carries in the running game for a score.

His 129 yards rushing put Johnson over the 2,000 mark in rushing yards recorded in his career and by any quarterback in the history of Mustang football, and moved him up to second all-time in the rushing history books.

The senior has led Morrisville State’s high powered offense to several national rankings in all of Division III football, including an 18th overall rank in total offense (504.5 yards per game). Johnson ranks eighth overall individually in total offense, averaging 347.8 yards per game.

A graduate of Ossining High, Johnson is majoring in criminal justice at Morrisville State College. He is the son of Esther Barrett of Ossining.

Deese named Corvias ECAC Southeast Rookie of the Week

DeeseA14 (Morrisville, NY – Oct. 15, 2014) The Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced its Corvias Division III Players of the Week for the Southeast Tuesday evening, naming Morrisville State College freshman cornerback Anthony Deese (Brooklyn, N.Y.) the Rookie of the Week for a second time this season.

Deese, who has also nabbed New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Defensive Rookie of the Week honors twice this season, helped Morrisville State remain unbeaten in conference play (3-0) with a 37-31 victory over Kean, as they improved their record to 5-1 overall.

In the contest, Deese registered his first collegiate interception late in the fourth quarter which he returned 17 yards into Kean territory to set up the Mustangs game-winning touchdown drive in the closing minutes of the contest.
