ColgateRaidersColgate Emerging Leaders Event Set for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 27 at Memorial Chapel

Olympic gold medalist Lauren Schmetterling ’10 and ESPN anchor David Lloyd ’83 are the featured guests for Thursday’s Colgate Emerging Leaders event.

Schmetterling was part of the U.S. Women’s Eight rowing crew that won the Olympic gold medal this summer in Rio de Janeiro. The Americans posted a winning final race time of 6 minutes and 1.49 seconds, defeating the Great Britain crew by 2½ seconds.

In winning gold, Schmetterling became the first Colgate athlete and first Patriot League athlete to win an Olympic gold medal. The Rio Games marked Lauren’s Olympic debut after she had helped the U.S. team to world championships in 2013 and 2014.

In 2015, Schmetterling was chosen as the U.S. Rowing Fan’s Choice National Team Member of the Year, voted on and presented to the team member who most embodies excellence in rowing.

At Colgate, Schmetterling lettered four years for the Raiders from 2007-10. The Moorestown, New Jersey, native graduated Cum Laude in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics.

Lloyd is one of ESPN’s longest-tenured anchors, having originally joined ESPN as an ESPNews anchor in October 1997. He currently hosts the noon Eastern time weekday SportsCenter with Cari Champion.

Before joining ESPNEWS, Lloyd was a weekend sports anchor at KGTV in San Diego. He served as weekend sports anchor at KTXL in Sacramento from 1990-96, and with WCIV in Charleston, South Carolina, from 1987-90. Lloyd began his television career in 1986 as an intern with WMAZ-TV in Macon, Georgia.

The Westport, Connecticut, native graduated from Colgate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations.

Colgate Vice President and Director of Athletics Victoria M. Chun ’91, MA’94 is handling the opening introductions. Schmetterling is bringing her gold medal with her to campus, and there will be a photo/autograph opportunity on the stage area of Memorial Chapel with both features speakers at the conclusion of the event.

The Emerging Leaders event, presented by the Colgate University Presidents’ Club, helps introduce students and attending alumni and parents to the Presidents’ Club by promoting one of its most important values: leadership. Former alumni and guests who have spoken at this event include Keith Ferrazzi, author of Never Eat Alone; Mark Devine ’85, former Navy SEAL; and Adonal Foyle ’98, retired NBA player.
