Jan. 13, 2020: Shots fired/shooting 300 block of Rutger Street
At approximately 6:45 p.m., Utica police units were dispatched to the 300 block of Rutger Street for a shots-fired investigation; units were already in the vicinity in relation to a gathering in remembrance of Quaheim Holland occurring on the block.
Upon arrival, officers located numerous shell casings about the area and witnessed individuals leaving the scene. They were able to speak to some parties who relayed that as the vigil was occurring, shots were fired, and everyone began to flee.
At that time, no victims were located, and officers processed the scene and left.
At approximately 8:45 p.m., a local hospital contacted 911 dispatch providing information that a female had just arrived with a gunshot wound. Officers then went to the hospital and spoke with the victim, who reported that while she was at the vigil, gunshots were fired and she was struck once in the hand.
She was not sure if any other parties were struck; however, the Utica Police Department has not received any additional reports of victims.
The investigation continues, as does our assistance to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office with their investigation.
