(Feb. 13, 2013) Assemblymember Sam Roberts (D/WF-Syracuse) announced that the filing deadline for volunteer firefighters to take advantage of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) college tuition reimbursement fund for the spring 2012 semester has been moved from Feb.1 to Feb. 15.
“The FASNY college tuition reimbursement fund is a great incentive for young people to further their education while becoming volunteer firefighters,” Assemblymember Roberts said. “Volunteer firefighters provide vital services to our community and the more we have, the safer we are.”
The original filing deadline to receive reimbursements for last year’s spring semester was pushed back from Feb.1 to Feb. 15 due to significant interest in the program.
“The cost of going to college is always increasing and we should help these heroes of our community in any way we can,” Assemblymember Roberts said. “This is a win-win situation for all those involved and I urge volunteer firefighters to take advantage of it.”
Under the program, volunteer firefighters who apply as students are eligible to have between 75 percent and 100 percent of their tuition reimbursed, based on their grades. The assistance is open to student-volunteer firefighters who have not received an associate’s degree or higher. Also, reimbursements are provided for community college tuitions only.
After the close of applications on Feb. 15, the next opportunity to apply for funding will be in early October for the fall 2012 semester.
