(Canastota, Chittenango, NY – Feb. 2013) The Great Swamp Conservancy of Canastota will be holding a New York State Sportsmen’s Education Program; a Hunter Safety Course at 8375 North Main St. Registration is March 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the GSC.
Madison County Firearms Coordinators Robert and Shelley Holdridge are the certified firearms educators. They donate their time to maintain safe and responsible hunters. The free course teaches how to handle firearms, first aid, and the security and safety of firearms in the home.
The course is offered to youth, ages 11 and up and adults. The class is limited to 20 students. Parents must sign an authorization form to register youth. Parents do not have to take the class if registering a child. Each student must register in person and attend all three scheduled classes held March 12 from 6 to 9 p.m., March 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. and the last class March 16 from 8 a.m. until finished at the Chittenango Rod and Gun Club, Lakeport Road, Chittenango where the student actually shoots a gun.
Hunters must receive this training before getting their first license. Students must attend all sessions, demonstrate proper attitude and safety and pass the tests.
These courses are funded in part by the Federal Aid in the Wildlife Restoration Act, and supported by Federal Excise taxes on hunting equipment.
