The Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark will hold its annual birthday celebration for abolitionist Gerrit Smith at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 9 at the Smithfield Community Center, 5255 Pleasant Valley Road, Peterboro. The program is free and open to the public.

(Peterboro, NY – March 2013) The Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark (GSENHL) opens the Peterboro heritage season with its annual program at 1 p.m. Saturday March 9 celebrating abolitionist Gerrit Smith’s birth March 6, 1797.

In recognition of the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War, Smith biographer Norman K. Dann PhD will describe activities of the Smith family and Smithfield during 1863 and share current research on Smith’s son Greene.

In 2013 the Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark will celebrate Greene Smith’s birthday on April 14 and the 150th anniversary of the building of his Ornithon, the bird museum in Peterboro on May 26.

In honor of Women’s History Month, Dann will announce his new publication Cousins of Reform: Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Gerrit Smith.  Following Dann’s 1863 background history the Stewards for the Gerrit Smith Estate will provide the schedule and information on 2013 Peterboro Heritage programs presented by the Gerrit Smith Estate and the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum.

The program at the Smithfield Community Center, 5255 Pleasant Valley Road, Peterboro is free and open to the public. All are encouraged to join this annual afternoon get-together.
