(Geneva, NY – March 5, 2013) Colgate scored four goals in the first eight minutes here Tuesday but couldn’t make them stand up in a 9-8 overtime loss to Hobart.

Taylor Vanderbeek tallied the game-winner off a terrific assist by Alex Love with 1:48 left in overtime for the Statesmen, who snapped a nine-game overtime losing streak dating to 2004. Hobart improved to 2-2 for this season.

Colgate’s Ryan Walsh scored a first-half hat trick to spark the Raiders to a 5-3 lead at intermission. And Peter Baum scored his second goal of the game with 8:39 left in regulation to hand Colgate an 8-7 lead.

But Cam Stone’s score with 2:17 to play forced the extra period, and then Love drew the defense toward him in overtime and found Vanderbeek all alone in front of the goal for the winner. Love also scored a hat trick to keep Hobart close.

Colgate led 2-0 on goals by Baum and Walsh, and then the Raiders would lead by two goals on five more occasions before the Statesmen finally tied it at 7-7 on Love’s third with 10:47 remaining. Baum’s goal pushed Colgate back into the lead before Stone and Vanderbeek combined for the late Hobart heroics.

The Raiders, 3-2, dropped their second game in a row to end their season-opening stretch of five straight games away from home. Colgate opens its home and Patriot League season Saturday against Holy Cross. Start time from Andy Kerr Stadium is 2 p.m.
