Madison County Pro-Ed Chair Johanna Bossard, right, congratulates Katey Oster of Madison County as this year’s New York Farm Bureau District 5 Scholarship Winner.
(Madison County, NY – March 2013) Katherine “Katey” Oster has won the District 5 scholarship that was given away by New York Farm Bureau’s Promotion and Education Committee. Katey, a Canastota High School Student, was recognized as the District 5 winner at the Madison County Farm Bureau Board meeting this month.
Katey received a $100 check from New York Farm Bureau, as well as a matching $100 check from Madison County Farm Bureau for her efforts.
Katey is the daughter of Becky Oster of Canastota. She is a very well-rounded student and has participated in a range of extracurricular activities. Katey’s been an active participant of 4-H Dairy Bowl activities and NYS Fair activities since 2004. She has also been involved in the New York State Jr. Holstein Association and the Canastota FFA.
She plans to attend Morrisville State College and major in dairy science.
Katey was required to write an essay answering the question “If you had the power to change something in your community or on your farm, what would you change and why?”
Her application and essay were reviewed by the judges, and both factored into her final score.
“The world of agriculture has a bright young leader,” said Johanna Bossard, Madison County Pro-Ed Chair. “Katey has clearly demonstrated her depth of knowledge and commitment to agriculture. With such a talented and intelligent leader on the horizon, the future of New York agriculture seems particularly bright. We are thrilled that our scholarship money will be put to good use in helping Katey reach her full potential.”
