Canastota Public Library News

(Canastota, NY – July 2013) Chair seat weaving and chair caning in particular, has been practiced for centuries and is a viable craft today, practiced all over the world.  Historically, the craft dates as far back as Egyptian times.  The techniques and materials have not changed much since caning began and only a few common tools are necessary to repair chair seats, making chair caning a craft that nearly anyone can master with just a little patience and tenacity.

You can learn the art of caning a chair seat at the Canastota Public Library this fall beginning on Monday, Sept. 23.  This small class offers individualized attention to detail.  The class will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. each Monday.

Justine Mulford, our volunteer instructor, has taught this craft at the library for several years now.  There is space this fall for a couple of adults to join the class.

Attendees must provide their own chair and caning materials.  To reserve your space and obtain a list of necessary supplies, please inquire at the library or call to reserve your space at 315-697-7030.
