Cazenovia library new(Cazenovia, NY – Oct. 2013) Children ages 8-14 are invited to the Cazenovia Public Library on Thursday, Oct. 10 from 1 to 3 p.m. for “Audubon for Kids,” the first in a series of programs to be offered when Cazenovia Schools are on a half-day schedule.

This engaging program is designed to allow children to investigate the artwork of John James Audubon (1785-1851).  Audubon—a naturalist, woodsman, and artist—introduced the world to the beauty and diversity of birds.

Audubon, a daring and colorful character, explored the natural history of much of the central and eastern United States and painted almost 500 species of the 700 or so regularly occurring North American species of birds.   His book The Birds of America is the result of this great effort.  (National Audubon Society, Inc.)

Participants in this program will use Audubon’s paintings along with individual birds from the museum’s extensive Hubbard bird collection to create an avian “masterpiece” of their own and qualify for a chance to win a beautiful art collection, donated to the library by a good friend who wants children to unleash the artist within.

This art collection consists of 178 pieces and includes just about everything an artist would need—color markers, crayons, color pencils, watercolor cakes, oil pastels, acrylic paint tubes, and much more—all arranged in a beautiful wooden case with adjustable trays.
