COLGATE C-GATERaiders Defensive Back Named by Patriot League, CFPA After Two-Interception Game

(Hamilton, NY – Oct. 7, 2013) Two interceptions equals three big awards.

Colgate’s Mike Armiento picked off two Cornell passes Saturday and that record-setting effort helped him pocket three weekly honors. The junior secondary ace earned National Defensive Performer and Defensive Back of the Week from the College Football Performance Awards, and Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week for the first time.

Colgate defeated Cornell 41-20 for its first victory of the season.

Armiento tallied 11 tackles to go with his two interceptions, one of which he returned 85 yards for his first collegiate touchdown. The Sunrise, Fla., native raced 49 yards with his second interception, leading to the Raiders’ final touchdown.

His 134 interception return yards set a Colgate game record, and the 85-yard return tied for fifth-longest in program history. Armiento leads the team with 48 tackles and now has three interceptions this season, nine for his career.

Armiento’s pick-six was Colgate’s first interception return for a touchdown since Vinnie Nicosia went 79 yards against Bucknell in 2011. It also marked Colgate’s first defensive score since Austin Dier carried in a fumble last year at Stony Brook.

Fordham’s Mike Nebrich picked up the Patriot League’s offensive award, while Bucknell’s Kyle Sullivan was named on special teams and Holy Cross quarterback Peter Pujals notched the rookie award.

Colgate (1-4) hosts Stony Brook (2-3) this Saturday in a 6 p.m. kickoff.
