(Madison County, NY- Feb. 2014) On Saturday, Feb. 15, and Sunday, Feb. 16, from 10:30 a.m. until noon and 12:30 to 2 p.m., LL Bean will host a Snowshoeing Discovery Course on the grounds of the Lorenzo State Historic Site. Expert instructors will lead you on a guided trek through the grounds (weather permitting). A $20 fee is charged but includes all the gear, equipment and instruction. On Thursday, Feb. 20, from 9 a.m. to noon, the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum will host a kids’ workshop. Kids will get to make their own checkerboard. Wood and paint will be provided. On Wednesday, March 5, from 10 a.m. to noon, state Archives Regional Advisory Officer Dr. Suzanne Etherington will present “Preservation of Historical Records, Part II” at the Cazenovia Public Library. The workshop will touch on topics such as how archival records are stored, how they are handled and key elements in prolonging their lives. Participants may bring examples of records needing preservation for an open discussion period. Seating is limited, and registration is required. On Saturday, March 8, from 2 to 4 p.m., the Peterboro Community Center will host its annual Gerrit Smith birthday party. Norman K. Dann, Ph.D., will describe Smith and Peterboro during the year 1864 in correlation with the sesquicentennial of the Civil War. The Smithfield Community Association will present on its developing focus and direction. Stewards from the Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark will present on the upcoming calendar of Peterboro Heritage programs. This event is free and open to the public. In honor of women’s history month, I will showcase Madison County’s history of progressive women who worked to better the world they lived in. The talk is free and open to the public. On Monday, April 7, at 7 p.m., the Canastota Canal Town Museum and the Canastota Public Library will host a presentation on local railroad historian John Taibi entitled “The People who worked the Railroad.” Taibi is the author of more than 20 publications dealing with central New York railroads. On Friday April 11th at 6:30 pm the Morrisville Public Library will host my presentation “Scandals of Madison County Part I.” The talk will focus on early scandals that rocked the local area. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 315.684.9130.

On Friday, April 25, the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum will host its annual Canal Clean Sweep. More information to come.
