(Morrisville, NY – March 25, 2014) Senior Cassie Edmondson (Oshawa, Ontario) intercepted an Alfred University pass and raced both the opponent and clock to register the game-tying score with eight ticks to go in regulation, added two more scores in the extra frame, to lead host Morrisville State College women’s lacrosse to a 16-14 overtime thriller over the visiting Saxons Tuesdayafternoon in Morrisville.
The win is the second for the Mustangs on the season that required an extra period, and lifts the hosts to 3-2 overall. Alfred dropped to 1-2 with the loss.
Edmondson tallied four goals altogether on the day, including the game winner in the extra frame, while teammates Hunter Waldau (Central Square, N.Y.) and Jessica Young (Clifton Park, N.Y.) each added four apiece as well.
Young added an assist to her tallies on the afternoon as teammate Kayla Dorrance (Cazenovia, N.Y.) dished out a team high four assists to go along with a score.
Megan Mack (Endicott, N.Y.) recorded the win between the pipes for Morrisville State, registering two saves in the final 41 minutes of play. Mack replaced Cailin Dunphy (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) who tallied one save in the opening 19 minutes of the contest.
Janelle Gallipeau led the Alfred efforts with five scores, with teammate Kaitlyn Button adding four and an assist. Megan Wendt posted three in the losing effort, while teammate Taylor Tarajos made 14 stops between the pipes.
Young gave Morrisville State an early 1-0 lead with a score off a feed from Kolleen Brown (Willet, N.Y.) nearly three minutes in, but the advantage was short lived as Alfred rattled off five straight scores over the next 10 minutes for a 5-1 lead with 17 minutes to go in the opening period.
Dorrance broke the scoring drought for the Mustangs with a scoring crease roll, before Shelby Wood (Duanesburg, N.Y.) and Waldau each added tallies to make it a two goal game with just over nine to go.
Ashley White regained a four-goal advantage for Alfred with back-to-back tallies, but Young and Waldau each posted another score to make it a 8-6 game in favor of the visitors at the half.
In the second, Gallipeau posted two straight for the Saxons to give them the 10-6 lead with 24 minutes to go, but Morrisville State spouted off four straight, including two from Young to knot the game at 10 with just over 14 minutes remaining in the period.
Both teams traded scores over the ensuing 11 minutes, and headed into the final minute tied at 12.
Wendt put the visitors up by one with 43 seconds showing on the clock and Alfred regained possession on the draw. With time winding down, the Saxons attempted a pass at the top of the zone that landed in an outstretched stick of Edmondson with 14.7 ticks to go, who took off towards the Mustangs offensive zone racing both the opponent and clock. Edmondson drove to the left and rifled a shot just inside the arc that went through the feet of Tarajos to tie the game at 13 and force the extra period.
In overtime, Waldau put Morrisville State up 14-13 on a free position with nearly three minutes into the extra frame, but Gallipeau quickly responded with a drive down the center of the arc for the tying score with 2:34 remaining.
Morrisville State regained possession on the ensuing opportunity and with 1:28 to go, Dorrance connected with the quick stick of Edmondson to give the Mustangs the 15-14 advantage.
Alfred won the draw but a caused turnover by the Mustangs defense regained possession for Morrisville State. As time wound down, Edmondson was able to get another shot off, and found the back of the net as time expired to seal the victory for the Mustangs.
Morrisville State held the 37-23 advantage in shots on the day, and edged the Saxons in the ground ball battle 35-30 with Edmondson posting a game high 10 for the Mustangs to go along with her seven caused turnovers.
Morrisville State returns to the field Saturday, traveling to Misericordia for a 1 p.m. contest.
