(Canastota, NY – May 2014) The International Boxing Hall of Fame recently announced former middleweight champion of the world Vito Antuofermo will attend festivities planned for the 25th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Weekend June 5 to 8.
“Vito Antuofermo was a rugged middleweight champion who provided fans with many thrilling moments during his championship career,” said Hall of Fame director Edward Brophy. “The Hall of Fame is excited to welcome him to Canastota to participate in 25th anniversary activities.”
Antuofermo, who was born in Italy, turned pro in 1971. He won the European light middleweight title from Eckhard Dagge (W 15) and scored wins over Denny Moyer (W 10), Bennie Briscoe (W 10) and Emile Griffith (W 10) before defeating Hugo Corro (W 15) for the world middleweight championship in June 1979. He drew with Marvelous Marvin Hagler in his first defense. After losing the title to Alan Minter (L 15), he would challenge for the world championship twice more, dropping rematches to Minter (1980) and Hagler (1981). Since retiring from the ring in 1985 with a 50-7-2 (21 KOs) record, Antuofermo has turned to acting, appearing in Goodfellas, The Godfather III and The Sopranos.
