(Madison County, NY – May 2017) On Saturday, May 17, the Smithfield Community Association will host an open house at the Smithfield Community Center.

On Sunday, May 18, at 11:30 a.m., Ted Bartlett of the Cazenovia Historic Preservation Committee will give a retrospective architectural presentation on the First Presbyterian Church of Cazenovia. The program will focus on the early design and Federal-style detailing within the 1860s structure. Bartlett will also discuss what the church looked like before it was moved to its present location on Albany Street. On Monday, May 19, at 7 p.m., the Town of Madison Historical Society will host “Madison County Exposed Part I” by Madison County Historian Matthew Urtz. The talk will focus on crimes, scandals and events that rocked the local area from pre-Madison County times until 1849. The event is free and open to the public.

On Tuesday, May 20, at 1 p.m., the Village of Manlius Historical Society will host a World War II history event. Speakers include Madison County Historian Matthew Urtz, who will talk about his Recording Veterans project and feature video’s from World War II veterans from Madison County. The event will finish with a roundtable of surviving veterans. More information to come.

On Thursday, May 22, from 7 to 9 p.m., the Cazenovia Preservation Foundation will present “Rehabbing Your Older Home” at St. Peter’s Church Parish Hall. Andrea Rebeck, an historic preservation architect will share how to plan for and prioritize rehabbing work on a historic building. After the presentation, the CPF will have a short business meeting and go over its plans for 2014. While the presentation is happening, a children’s program will be offered. On Saturday, May 31, at 10 a.m., the Lorenzo State Historic Site will sponsor “Ever Peaceful, Ever Beautiful: Discovering Historic Evergreen Cemetery.” Scott Shannon, associate provost for instruction and dean of the graduate school at SUNY ESF will lead a working tour of the historic design features of the cemetery. After the tour, Lorenzo archivist Sharon Cooney and historic preservation consultant Sarah Tietje will present information on various figures interred at Evergreen, as well as the historic symbolism displayed on their monuments. On Saturday, May 31, the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum will host a genealogy seminar. More information to come.

On Saturday, June 7, and Sunday, June 8, the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum will host a viewing of The Abolitionist. This viewing coincides with the New York State Path Through History Weekend. More information to come.

On Wednesday, June 11, the Erieville/Nelson Heritage Society welcomes Madison County Historian Matthew Urtz who will present “Madison County Exposed.” The talk features salacious stories and scandals that rocked the county’s local newspapers throughout its history. On Friday, June 13, from 6 to 8 p.m., the Friends of Lorenzo will host its annual gala garden party at the Lorenzo State Historic Site in Cazenovia. On Friday, June 13, at 6:30 p.m., the Morrisville Public Library will host “Scandals of Madison County Part III” by Madison County Historian Matthew Urtz. On Saturday, June 14, and Sunday, June 15, the hamlet of Peterboro will host the 22nd annual Civil War Weekend. Military and Civilian encampments, shopping, games, special exhibits and tours and more. More information to come.

On Sunday, June 15, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Lorenzo State Historic Site will host Eurocar 2014. Come and see numerous European manufactured automobiles including MG, Alfa, BMW, Porsche, Austin-Healey, Fiat and Triumph. Music, food, and related vendors will also be featured. On Sunday, June 15, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the Lorenzo State Historic Site will also host its annual garden art show. Outdoor exhibitions of painting and sculpture will be installed throughout the formal garden and Dark Aisle arboretum. This event is sponsored by Cazenovia Arts. On Sunday, June 22, from noon to 5 p.m., the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum will host their annual Canal Fest and chicken barbecue.
