(Hamilton, NY – Aug. 2014) Colgate head coach Dan Hunt completed his first-year coaching staff with the addition of Brent Bassham.
The Chesaning, Michigan, product arrives after spending more than a year as defensive quality control coach at Syracuse. Before his tour with the Orange, Bassham in 2012 was offensive coordinator and assistant head coach at NAIA-member Concordia (Michigan). Bassham helped Concordia set 32 offensive school records that season while overseeing the quarterbacks, receivers, tight ends, fullback and the punting unit.
He was selected as an offensive coordinator for the 2012 All-American Bowl, a multidivisional all-star game that took place in Minneapolis.
“Brent comes very highly recommended from Coach (Scott) Shafer over at Syracuse,” Hunt said. “He has experience coaching both sides of the ball as well as every position on offense.
“It’s great to get him in right before the start of camp. His being local makes it a little easier, and he’s familiar with our program. He will be working with the wide receivers, and we’re excited about what he brings to our offensive package.”
Bassham began his coaching career as a student assistant at his alma mater, Western Michigan University. He started in 2006 working with the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. In 2007-08, he moved over to support the defensive coordinator and secondary coaches while also assisting the recruiting coordinator. Bassham remained at Western Michigan for 2009 and 2010 as a defensive graduate assistant and earned his master’s degree in sports studies (coaching).
Bassham earned his undergraduate degree in physical education fromWMU in 2008.
“I’m excited to be here and be part of a great football program,” Bassham said. “I can’t wait to get started with practices and working with these great young men here at Colgate.”
In 2011, Bassham was the offensive coordinator at Lansing Eastern High School, where he coached the quarterbacks, running backs, receivers and tight ends.
His primary duty with Colgate is with the wide receivers. Bassham joins Tem Lukabu as the newest members of Hunt’s debut staff. Terry Dow also was promoted to the coaching staff this summer after spending last season as a volunteer assistant.
Bassham is married to the former Candice Smith of Howell, Michigan.
