(Canastota, NY – Oct. 2014) The Canastota Rotary Club will give $500 to the Literacy Coalition of Madison County to support its efforts to improve countywide literacy. The Rotary Club also donated $500 to the Canastota Public Library to help fund the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, a program that mails an age-appropriate book to children in our community from birth to age five.

The Rotary Club voted to make these monetary gifts to both organizations on an annual basis.

“I am so thankful to receive this funding, as it will pay for the book mailing costs for 20 children this coming year,” said Liz Metzger, director of the Canastota Public Library. “Currently, 219 children are enrolled and another 124 participated until ‘graduating’ at age 5. Dolly Parton pays for the books, but sponsoring organizations are responsible for the postage costs and our fundraising efforts are ongoing.”

“On behalf of the Literacy Coalition, we are sincerely grateful to the Canastota Rotary Club for its generosity,” said Fred Bragan, executive director of the Literacy Coalition. “In our efforts to increase child, family and adult literacy in our county, funding is critical to accomplish our mission. These funds, especially as an annual donation, will assist us in meeting our goals.”

“Literacy has always been a core focus of Rotary, internationally and locally,” said Canastota School Superintendent and Rotary President June Clarke. “We are pleased to be able to help support the Canastota Public Library and the Literacy Coalition of Madison County.”
