(Oneida, NY) On Wednesday May 13 at 7 p.m., the Oneida Community Mansion House welcomes Giles Wayland-Smith in its free series “Buildings By Design: Your Neighborhood Architects.”
Wayland-Smith will present “The Influence of the Oneida Community on the Architecture of Theodore Skinner.”
A child of the Community’s eugenics program, Skinner graduated from MIT’s engineering and architectural program, apprenticed with the famous New York City architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White, and later not only designed private homes in this area but also headed the planning commission laying out the development of Sherrill as a newly incorporated city. Several values and practices of the Oneida Community infused all of his work.
Dr. Wayland-Smith, the grandson of Theodore Skinner, is an emeritus professor of Allegheny College and long-term trustee of OCMH.
The Mansion House is located at 170 Kenwood Avenue in Oneida.
