(Hamilton, NY- May 2015) Fifty runners and walkers turned out at the Hamilton Municipal Airport on Saturday May 2 for a 5K Run/Walk that was a fundraiser for the Chenango Canal Association. This run was a sanctioned race with USA Track & Field.
Winners for medals in the Children/Teen category were Ben Parfitt, 1st place; Lauren Laruffa, 2nd place and Lucas Smith, 3rd place.
1st, 2nd, and 3rd place medal winners for the Women’s Category were Lauren Laruffa, Kelsey Bush and Elizabeth Fish.
1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners for Men’s Category were Ben Parfitt, Ken Belanger and Eric Lindley.
The first 50 registrants received a T Shirt, courtesy of Screen It and COVE of Colgate University. Walkers received a walker’s pin for completing the course and a $100 gift certificate to the Hamilton Eatery was awarded for the best outfits/costumes to Donna Wicks and family who walked with their dog.
The start was at Gate 7 on Airport Road going north on an abandoned railroad bed to Woodman Road and then onto the Chenango Canal Towpath Trail back towards the airport. The 5k run continued south on the west side of the airport along the newest part of the trail just completed by Randy Weaver’s crew from the Hamilton Department of Public Works.
The trail is scenic, passing by the Chenango Canal, Woodman Pond and Secret Lake and winding through a wooded area. The trail was recently revamped due to the new security fence installed around the runway. More improvements on the trail will come as the crew gets time. Some people came from Rome, West Winfield and Waterville to see the new trail, which is considered a real asset for the village.
