OPL’s Poetry Hour tackles ‘Spoon River’ May 21

oneida-public-library(Oneida, NY – May 2015) Edgar Lee Masters’ small-town epic “Spoon River Anthology” is the subject of discussion in the Poetry Hour at Oneida Public Library on Thursday May 21 at 7 p.m.

The discussion leader, OPL Assistant Director Tom Murray, will select representative poems from the collection of over 200 lyrical poems in the anthology, each one an individual portrait, often told in the first-person, of the dead “sleeping on the hill.”

Masters’ sad, funny and bitter portraits of individual lives in a small Midwestern town at the turn of the century was a commercial and critical success that influenced later chroniclers of the American small town like Sinclair Lewis and William Faulkner.

The program is free and open to all. Refreshments will be shared.
