(Canastota, NY – June 2015) Hope Christian Fellowship would like to extend an invitation to the general public, but especially to veterans, to attend a special free showing of a new documentary film on the life of Louis Zamperini (1917-2014).
Born in Olean, NY but raised in California, Zamperini joined his high school track team. Excelling at long-distance events, he competed in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. A bombardier in the Army Air Corps during World War II, he was in a plane that went down. After surviving 47 days in shark-infested waters, he was taken as a Japanese prisoner of war and tortured for two years until his release at the end of the war.
Fortunately, Zamperini’s story did not end there. He became the inspirational figure whose life served as the basis for the 2014 best-selling biographical book and Oscar-nominated motion picture “Unbroken.” But that movie did not show what the late Paul Harvey used to refer to as “the rest of the story,” which this new documentary explores.
Therefore, the public is invited to come and join in honoring all veterans present. The film will be shown at Hope Christian Fellowship, 119 South Peterboro Street, at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 11. For more information, contact Pastor Tom Burgess at 463-9737 or tgb1953@aol.com.
