County Seal(Wampsville, NY – June 11, 2015) Madison County will receive revenue of approximately $700,000 over the life of a five year agreement with the Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency (OCRRA) for landfill cover material (ash residue)per an agreement approved by the Board of Supervisors on June 9 and pending further approval by the OCRRA Board of Directors on June 10.

OCRRA, a public benefit corporation located in Syracuse, has agreed to pay Madison County $14 for each ton of ash residue delivered to the Buyea Rd. Landfill. OCRRA’s Waste-to-Energy Facility has a steady supply of ash residue that Madison County needs for daily landfill cover material.

The five-year agreement with OCRRA for alternative landfill cover material will commence on June 10, 2015 and ending June 9, 2020 with an option to extend the agreement an additional five years, pending approval by OCRRA.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) allows the use of ash residue as landfill cover as a beneficial use material.

According to Director James Zecca, Madison County was able to negotiate a mutually beneficial agreement with OCCRA that is a win–win situation with a significant cost savings to both government entities.

  1. There is a law that no trash will be imported to our landfill from out of county.

Ash is trash in a reduced form!! So it is imported trash from out of counry. Proven by the fact that ocrra is paying us to take the ash/trash.
