(Oneida, NY – July 2015) Jazz performer, composer and educator Monk Rowe will be leading a Jazz Improvisation Workshop for a select group of teen and adult musicians of greater Oneida on Saturday July 25 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., to be followed by a public jazz concert by the students and the Monk Rowe Trio.

Funded by CNY Arts and free to participants, the workshop is limited to 10 instrumentalists who want to learn how to play jazz successfully. Those who are interested can sign up at the library’s circulation desk.

In addition to countless jazz performances on piano and saxophone regionally and nationally, Monk Rowe is an adjunct music instructor at Hamilton College and has been director of the Hamilton College Jazz Archive since 1995. The mission of the archive, according to Rowe, is to gather definitive video interviews with renowned American jazz artists, with over 300 interviews conducted to date.

During the workshop, Rowe will engage participants in taking the first steps of playing by ear, trying different improvisational styles of jazz and the blues as well as composing their own improvisational pieces. After a short break, armed with their new jamming skills, the group will join Rowe and his fellow musicians in the Monk Rowe Trio in a public concert at 3:00 p.m. that same day, July 25, in the library’s Meeting Room.
