Urtz present CNY Hops; Past, Present and Future which will give a brief history of how hops first became a cash crop, the reasons it disappeared and how its re-emergence occurred. On Tuesday August 11 at 6:00 pm the Oneida County Historical Society will host a special exhibit opening entitled “Home Sweet Home.” The exhibit will highlight historic Utica neighborhoods that were planned by the nationally renowned firm of Frederick Law Olmstead. Olmstead designed Utica’s park system as well as Central Park in NYC. Former Oneida County Historian Virginia Kelly and Architect Michael Lehman will speak about their book of the same name. On Thursday August 13 at 6:30 pm the Lorenzo State Historic Site will host “Moonlight Medley: Music & Movie at Lorenzo.” Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and enjoy a summer evening of live music and classic cinema. J.T. Hall will perform a jazz concert followed by the 1952 classic movie The Quiet Man on the front lawn of Lorenzo (weather permitting). On Sunday August 16 the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum will host its annual Dusty Metzger memorial golf tournament at the Woodcrest Gold Club. Come with your three closest friends to have a fun filled day on the course to benefit the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum. Entry fees are $75 per person, $300 for a team and includes a cart, coffee, donuts, hotdog and soda at the turn, banquet, prizes and raffles. The tournament is a Captain N’ Crew style format. On Sunday August 16 at 2:00 pm Oakwood Cemetery in Syracuse will host a guided walking tour entitled “Odd Jobs: Syracusans at work” Sue Greenhagen will lead a tour looking at how folks in and around Syracuse made a living back in the day. On Saturday September 19 from 11:00 am to 5:30 pm the Madison County Historical Society will host the 20th annual Hop Festival. Admission is free to see guest speakers, specialty hops exhibits, live music, special raffles and more. At 2 pm the grounds will host the “Taste of Hops.” Over 10 restaurants will be on hand with special dishes that are part of the hop theme. Tickets for the “Taste of Hops” are $20 in advance and $25 on the day of the event. From 2:30 to 5:30 a specialty beer tasting event will take place with over 30 craft brewers.
