(Aug. 2015) Assemblyman Bill Magee (D-Nelson) recently announced that local libraries will receive more than $146,000 in construction grants for various renovation projects. The grants, which Magee helped secure in the 2014-15 state budget, will help libraries in Madison, Oneida and Otsego counties make infrastructure upgrades ranging from lighting and electrical improvements to library expansion.

“Libraries are vital to our communities. They are free and accessible, provide a family-friendly environment and are a great educational and recreational resource,” Magee said. “Many libraries also provide job-seeking services such as resume support and Internet access for those looking for employment.”

Assemblyman Magee announced that the Earlville Free Library in Madison County will receive $10,950 for a roof renovation project, and the New Woodstock Free Library, also in Madison County, will receive $21,498 to purchase property and a building for expansion.

The Oneida Public Library will receive $86,899 for lighting and electrical work for its new library.

The Village Library of Cooperstown in Otsego County will receive $26,933 toward its renovation project. The library has pledged $10,000 as a potential matching grant for construction upgrades, with $1,500 budgeted for computer improvements.

A total of 182 construction grants have been awarded to public libraries across the state, which was made possible through a $14 million capital fund appropriation included in the 2014-15 state budget for the construction and renovation of public libraries and public library systems.

“These funds will help Central New York libraries make much-needed improvements so that they can better serve our communities. I’ll continue fighting to secure more funding for our local libraries,” Magee said.
