(Town of Fenner, NY – Sept. 2015) The Madison County Historian’s Office invites you to Nichols Pond Park in Fenner to experience Madison County Archives Day on Sunday Oct. 4 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Come and experience the history and the beauty of Nichols Pond park, site of a pre-colonial Oneida Indian Nation Village as well as being one of the locations commonly referenced where Samuel de Champlain and a band of Huron Native Americans battled the Iroquois nation.
Speakers will include representatives of the Oneida Nation who will be on hand to share what life might have been like at the early Oneida village located at the site. Colgate University Upstate Institute Intern Henry Marshall will present the story of Champlain’s march through central New York during the day as well.
Special exhibitions featuring artifacts from recent archeological digs and private collections, as well as the three most recent archeological reports and an early history of how the park came into the counties possession will be on display.
Local tour guides will be on hand to give tours of the grounds highlighting a number of prominent features including a burial ground, grain pits, evidence of a stockade wall and the modern day observation deck overlooking the wetlands.
Nichols Pond Park is located at 5797 Nichols Pond Road in the Town of Fenner. Bring the whole family to explore the trails and wetlands while learning about the rich cultural history listed at this site.
