Special Olympics

(Canastota, NY – Oct. 2015) More than 270 student-athletes from Madison and Oneida counties are expected to participate in this year’s Special Olympics Autumn Games Oct. 7 at the Canastota High School Athletic Complex, 102 Roberts St. The public is invited to watch the games.

Events include track and field events, such as shot put, running long jump, standing long jump and distance races. There will also be adapted activities for athletes requiring additional assistance in competing. An Olympic Village staffed by area high school and BOCES students will have crafts and games for athletes and spectators during the event.

The Parade of Athletes around the track will begin at about 9:30 a.m., followed by Opening Ceremonies that will include welcome addresses, the Pledge of Allegiance and the recitation of the Special Olympics oath. Competitions are expected to begin around 10:15 a.m.

School districts sending athletes to this year’s Autumn Games include: Camden, Canastota, Cazenovia, Chittenango, Hamilton, Madison, Morrisville-Eaton, Oneida, Stockbridge Valley, Vernon-Verona-Sherrill and Madison-Oneida BOCES.

*The rain date for this event is Oct. 8. Events will follow the same schedule.
