Wade, Evans named Mustang Athletes of the Week

(Morrisville, NY – Nov. 2015) The Morrisville State College athletics department has announced its weekly award honorees, naming freshman Raylene Wade (Red Creek, N.Y.) and junior Byron Evans (Cazenovia, N.Y.) the Mustang Athletes of the Week for the week ending Oct. 18.

Wade paced the women’s cross country team to a program best 4th place finish at the CCOC Championships on Saturday, recording a collegiate best 5K time of 20:39.7 for a 15th individual place finish in the field of 121 runners and 14 total teams.

The freshman led the Mustang pack with a personal best time.

A graduate of Red Creek Central, Wade is majoring in human performance and health promotion at Morrisville State. She is the daughter of Shannon and Thomas Wade of Red Creek.

Evans collected his second individual win on the season with a top place finish at the CCOC’s held at Seneca Lake Park on Saturday in Geneva.

The junior took the lead at the two mile mark and held on for the win, crossing the finish line in 26:48.8, 4.3 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. His time tied the all-time Morrisville State record for an 8K race, as he led the team to its best finish in program history at the CCOC’s, third overall out of 13 competing teams. Evans was the top finisher in a field of 125 total competitors.

Evans is majoring in automotive technology at Morrisville State. He is the son of Merry and Jim Evans of Cazenovia.

Cavellier, Pena named Mustang Athletes of the Week

The Morrisville State College athletics department has announced its weekly award winners, naming freshman Courtney Cavellier (Rodman, N.Y.) and senior Cristian Pena (Ridgewood, N.Y.) the Mustang Athletes of the Week for the week ending Oct. 24.

Cavellier, a forward with the women’s soccer team, posted a goal for the Mustangs in a 1-1 double overtime draw with visiting Cazenovia College on Thursday. Trailing 1-0 late in the second half, Cavellier launched a direct kick into the upper right hand corner of the net to tie the game and force the overtime period.

The forward currently has 11 points for the Mustangs on the season, including five goals, two of which were game winners.

Morrisville State. She is the daughter of Marsha and Lonnie Cavellier of Rodman.

Pena led Morrisville State to a 24-14 football victory over visiting Ithaca College on Saturday.

In the contest he led the charge against the nationally sixth ranked Bomber rushing defense, posting 116 yards rushing on 23 carries for two scores against Ithaca. Pena scored on one-yard and nine-yard carries, while adding a 50-yard passing touchdown in the third quarter.

The senior is a graduate of Enterprise High and is majoring in automotive technology at Morrisville State. He is the son of Ana Gonzalez of Ridgewood.

NEAC names four from Morrisville State to Field Hockey All-Conference Team

The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) has announced its 2015 Field Hockey All-Conference selections, naming four from Morrisville State to its 14 person team.

Forwards Allyson Flurer (Kunkletown, Pa.) and Lauren Kellum (Eaton, N.Y.) along with midfielder Sandra Clark (Morrisville, N.Y.) and defender Holly Gamlen (Cazenovia, N.Y.) all received recognition on the first ever team after the NEAC held its inaugural season as a conference-sponsored sport this fall.

Flurer, sophomore, finished the season ranked fifth in the NEAC in goals scored (5), and was ranked fourth in total points (12). Flurer’s ability to finish created opportunities for the Mustangs on the offensive end of the field.

Kellum completed the season ranked second overall in points (21) behind her team leading nine goals and three assists. The sophomore’s nine tallies also ranked second overall in goals scored and was tied for second in game winning scores (2) within the NEAC.

Clark, finished her second season on the Mustang squad ranked eighth in points (7) and third in assists in the NEAC, with three. Her speed and skill set her apart from the rest of the midfield pack and created several opportunities for the Mustangs in the transition game.

Gamlen earned All-Conference accolades after her first collegiate season, playing back for the Mustangs. Gamlen was involved in nearly all facets of the game, both offensively on penalty corners and defensively as well and often was the go to person to initiate the transition game for Morrisville State.
