(Morrisville, NY – Oct. 2015) The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) announced its annual Inspirational Award recipients recently highlighting life-saving actions, inspiring events and successful comebacks that seven individuals across the conference endured during the 2014-15 athletic year. Among those receiving the Inspirational Award are Morrisville State College head athletic trainer Todd Kleinhans (Manlius, N.Y.), and men’s lacrosse student-athlete John Petriello (Carmel, N.Y.).

Kleinhans and Petriello were recipients of the award for their heroic, life-saving action this past spring.

The NEAC Inspirational Award is presented annually (if applicable) to an individual or individuals who have endured personal hardships that have led to bravery and/or dedication within athletics through participation, volunteerism, coaching and/or administrating.

As the men’s lacrosse team traveled home from a regular season scheduled contest, a member of the program suddenly went into full cardiac arrest on the bus. Kleinhans, as a certified athletic trainer, and Petriello, a certified lifeguard, both used their cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training to immediately take action.

Kleinhans called 911 before clearing the scene, allowing room for him and Petriello to both begin CPR on their fallen teammate. Kleinhans then worked directly with the emergency medical technicians once they arrived on the scene.

The instant actions taken by both Petriello and Kleinhans that day saved the young man’s life. Their ability to put their training to proper use, while staying poised under pressure, not only helped save the student-athlete’s life, but truly made them both heroes that day.

The young man survived the incident and has since made a full recovery.

“I think we can all learn from the quick actions taken by Todd and John that day, and the importance of taking CPR and first aid training seriously,” said MSC Athletic Director Greg Carroll.

Kleinhans, who has served as the head athletic trainer for the Mustangs since 1999, has been active in training the Morrisville State College coaching staff and department members in CPR for several years.

Throughout his time on the Morrisville State sidelines, Kleinhans has made decisions that have been in the best interest of the student-athletes health and well-being.

“It is very humbling to receive this award,” Kleinhans said. “As a Certified Athletic Trainer, I knew that I could be placed in a situation to make critical decisions that could save a person’s life.”

“I am very grateful that in this situation there was a positive outcome, and (we) were able to have the impact that (we) did to save the young man’s life.”

Petriello didn’t hesitate when it came to helping his fallen teammate. The senior is a life guard, and has undergone several hours of life-saving training education.

“After many hours of training and four years of being a life guard, I don’t believe my actions that day were anything out of the ordinary, I was just doing the job I was trained to do, just in a different venue,” Petriello stated.

“I am beyond honored to be receiving this award, and am extremely grateful that I could be of assistance to our athletic trainer on that day to help save my teammate’s life.”

“On any given day we can find ourselves in a position where we need to do something heroic; their actions last spring were truly that, heroic,” said Carroll.
