(Oneida, NY – Nov. 2015) Jazz musician and historian Monk Rowe is coming back to Oneida Public Library on Wednesday Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. to talk about his new book “Jazz Tales from Jazz Legends,” show excerpts of his videotaped interviews with jazz artists and perform live musical numbers that reflect the styles and skills of his subjects.
Rowe, the Joe Williams Director of the Fillius Jazz Archive at Hamilton College in Clinton, co-authored with his wife, Romy Britell, “Jazz Tales from Jazz Legends” to showcase jazz greats like Dave Brubeck and Marian McPartland selected from the 325 personal interviews conducted for the archive. The book is organized to highlight the essential life of modern American jazz artists through first-hand accounts of life on the road, race relations, inspiration, improvisation and music studio work.
In addition, “Stories from unsung sidemen offer a rare perspective on the life and times of jazz artists who balance the love of music with the sacrifice inherent in the jazz lifestyle,” Rowe said.
Copies of the book will be available for sale and signing by the author.
