Lark named CHC Rookie of the Week

(Morrisville, NY – Dec. 2015) The Colonial Hockey Conference (CHC) announced its weekly awards Monday, naming Morrisville State College women’s hockey defender Ciara Lark (Mildmay, Ontario) the Rookie of the Week for the week ending Nov. 29.

Lark continued her consistent play on the blue line for the Mustangs, as they went 0-2-1 on the week’s action.

On Tuesday, Lark was part of a defensive unit that held Utica College to just one goal, before notching the game-tying assist against Sacred Heart to force an overtime period on Sunday as the Mustangs settled for the 1-1 draw.

Her assist on Sunday was her fourth of the season.

The freshman is a graduate of Walkerton District Community School and is majoring in applied psychology at Morrisville State. She is the daughter of Jacquie and Bill Lark of Mildmay, Ontario.

Empire 8 names six from Morrisville State to All-Conference Teams

The Empire 8 Conference announced its 2015 Football All-Conference team selections recently naming six from Morrisville State College to its first and second teams.

Seniors Cristian Pena (Ridgewood, N.Y.), Fahraad Johnson (Westbury, N.Y.) and Kenny Maryon (Kingston, N.Y.) headline the first team for the Mustangs, while teammates Anthony Mella (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Julian Serrano (Bronx, N.Y.) and Caleb Wright (Cortland, N.Y.) were honored with second team accolades.

Pena led Morrisville State in the running game, compiling 1,048 total yards across 10 games for a 104.8 yard/game average. The senior ranked second overall in the Empire 8 in rushing, and was second in rushing touchdowns with 17. Pena added 116 yards in the passing game on 2-of-2 completions, throwing two touchdowns. He also added 146 yards in the receiving game, collecting a touchdown.

Pena is a first team All-Empire 8 selection at running back, and is also a second team selection for All-Purpose, compiling 1198 total yards on the season.

Johnson and Maryon played a critical role for the solid offensive line that led the Empire 8 in rushing and ranked fourth in passing with 2,003 yards and 2,436 yards, respectively.

Morrisville State also led the Empire 8 in total offense, collecting on average 446.6 yards per game, 6.3 yards per play, while ranking fourth in scoring in the conference at 31.0 points per game.

Johnson is a first team All-Conference selection at right tackle and was a preseason D3football.com second team All-American selection.

Maryon is a first team All-Conference selection at center.

Mella earned second team offense honors, after compiling 829 yards on 37 receptions at wide receiver for the Mustangs, scoring five touchdowns across the season. He averaged 82.9 yards per game and 22.4 yards per catch while ranking eighth overall in the Empire 8 in receiving.

Serrano earns second team accolades on the defensive line following a stellar season for Morrisville State. The senior ranked fourth overall in the conference in tackles for a loss (16-for-60) and was sixth overall in sacks (7-for-39 yards). On the season he posted 63 total stops, 32 of which came as solo tackles, while adding two quarterback hurries and five pass break-ups to his tallies.

Serrano was named the Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 26, and also earned ECAC Corvias Division III North Defensive Player of the Week honors the following day.

Wright was named to the second team at defensive back following his team high 84 tackle season, 54 of which came on solo stops. The senior ranked ninth overall in the Empire 8 in tackles, averaging 8.4 per game. Across the season he added a forced fumble, recovered another and had three pass break-ups.

Evans named to Empire 8 Sportsman of the Year Team

The Empire 8 announced its 2015 Sportsman of the Year Team Monday, naming Morrisville State College senior linebacker Colton Evans (West Winfield, N.Y.) to the team.

The Sportsman of the Year Team award goes to one member of each team within the Empire 8 that distinguishes themselves and consistently exhibits the critical traits as outstanding sportsman.

The Empire 8 emphasizes that “Competing with Honor and Integrity” is an essential component of a student-athlete’s experience in conjunction with an institution’s educational mission.

Evans appeared and started in all 10 games for the Mustangs, and throughout the season compiled 64 total tackles, 36 of which were solo stops, while adding a total 14 for a loss of 73 yards. Across the season he registered seven sacks for a loss of 42 yards and was responsible for 42 quarterback hurries.

Evans is a graduate of Mount Markham High and is a web development and management major at Morrisville State. The 2015 USA Division III Preseason All-American is the son of Carol and Kevin Evans of West Winfield.

Belush competes on SUNY Oneonta women’s soccer team

(Dec. 2015) Kayla Belush a Spanish, International Studies major from Earlville was a member of the 2015 SUNY Oneonta women’s soccer team.

The team finished 15-4-2 overall and 7-1-1 in the SUNYAC. The Red Dragons captured its 13th conference title and made its 15th appearnce in the NCAA tournament where they advanced to the round of 16.

Kayla played in 19 games this season. All three of her goals were game winning goals for a total of six points.
