(Sherburne, Earlville, NY – Jan. 2016) According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American spends approximately 86 percent of their entire life indoors, and another 6 percent in some sort of automobile. That percentage only grows larger during the cold winter months, as many tend to trade outdoor fun for indoor alternatives.
Rogers Environmental Education Center in Sherburne has the perfect way to avoid this sedentary slump and remain active outside. On Feb. 6, Friends of Rogers will host a special Snowshoe Family Fun program for visitors to enjoy the outdoors while learning a new skill. The session will include a leisurely snowshoe hike on one of the many trails located at Rogers Center.
Snowshoeing provides an opportunity to get outdoor exercise during a time of year when the weather can be challenging. For all ages, if you can walk then you can snowshoe. In addition to being the perfect combination of fresh air, exercise and quality family time, snowshoeing can be a great way to relax the mind and reinvigorate the body during a winter season filled with primarily indoor activities.
This special edition of Family Fun is made possible thanks to the generosity of Clyde’s Little Red Barn in Earlville. With their support, snowshoe rental will be free during this program.
“We are extremely grateful to Clyde’s Little Red Barn for partnering with us,” said Simon Solomon, FOR executive director. “Since 2011, when Friends of Rogers saved Rogers Environmental Education Center from closing, we have relied on the generosity of local businesses like Clyde’s to support community activities, allowing this vital resource to be preserved – and to flourish.”
Snowshoe Family Fun will begin at the Visitor Center on state Route 80 in Sherburne; those needing to may use the adjacent parking lot, and the center has handicapped-accessible parking.
Family Fun Programs are held at 10:30 a.m. on the first and third Saturday of every month and last approximately one hour. While there is no charge, Friends of Rogers encourages contributions to support future operation.
Rogers Center is operated by Friends of Rogers Environmental Education Center, Inc., a nonprofit organization that offers educational programs for all ages. Seasonal winter hours are from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, call (607) 674-4733 or visit www.friendsofrogers.org.
