FBLA students who will be staffing the student-run, on-campus bank hosted a grand opening and ribbon cutting on Wednesday morning, along with advisers Liz Garofalo and Bob Esposito. The credit union will be open every Wednesday from 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. for students, parents and district staff to create accounts. The credit union office located near the high school cafeteria.
Canastota Mayor Carla DeShaw was among the distinguished guests at the grand opening, along with John Vero and other representatives of the Rome Teachers Federal Credit Union, which is sponsoring the CHS branch.
“I’m excited to be here for another business opening in Canastota,” DeShaw said.
Superintendent June Clarke told the students that operating a working bank is a great opportunity to gain leadership and work experience and to explore potential career paths.
“We’re all really proud of the work you and your teachers have done to make this happen,” she said.
Staff of the RTFCU main branch in Rome will be on site during CHS branch hours to assist students as they open accounts and log information. CHS students who will be working at the Raider Nation Credit Union were required to attend training at the Rome bank office to observe tellers conduct transactions and work with customers.
The credit union will host an Open House on March 3 from 3-7 p.m. for anyone interested in learning more about it.
