The newly formed Utica NY Area Irish Coalition will host a special advance screening of a landmark new documentary about the 1916 Easter Rising.
The $3 million film, entitled 1916 The Irish Rebellion, is narrated by Liam Neeson and produced by the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies at the University of Notre Dame to honor the 100th anniversary of the uprising in April 1916 which led to Irish independence from England.
From the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies website:
“On Easter Monday 1916, a small group of Irish rebels—including poets, teachers, actors and workers—took on the might of the British Empire. Although defeated militarily, the men and women of the Easter Rising would soon win a moral victory—with their actions leading to the creation of an independent Irish state and contributing to the eventual disintegration of the British empire. They have inspired countless freedom struggles throughout the world—from Ireland to India.”
New Yorkers will have the opportunity to see the three-hour documentary Saturday, April 9, from 1:00-5:00pm at the New Hartford High School Auditorium. Refreshments will be provided and there will be an opportunity for discussion during intermissions between the one-hour segments.
Admission is free, though donations will be gratefully accepted to defray costs.
