letters to the editorTo The Editor:

The American Red Cross, Central New York Chapter, is honoring its volunteers and the work they do in the community during National Volunteer Week, April 10 through 17.

Last year, our volunteers helped 283 local families who faced home fires and other disaster situations. They trained 22,980 people in lifesaving skills and assisted 195 military members, veterans and their families and collected 36,609 blood donations. Volunteers also went door-to-door in neighborhoods at high risk for home fires to install 255 smoke alarms and teach people about home fire safety.

I invite the public to join us and become a Red Cross volunteer. Go towww.redcross.org/volunteer to learn more about the many ways people can help and how to submit a volunteer application.

I want to extend my sincerest thanks to the 851 local Red Cross volunteers who help us fulfill our mission here in the Central New York. Their support allows us to help people when they need it most.

Sincerely,

Rosie Taravella, Regional Chief Executive Officer, American Red Cross, Western and Central New York Region
