(New Hartford – March 7) Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney (R-New Hartford) criticized Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s plan to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour following revised employment data released last week by the state Labor Department. The data revealed statewide private sector employment growth in New York was less than half the national rate and was at its lowest growth rate in New York since the end of the recession in 2009. The total year-to-year gain was less than half the average recorded in each of the four previous Decembers since Gov. Andrew Cuomo took office.

“It is disappointing that despite the clear fact that New York’s economy is in a tailspin, the governor continues to push an agenda destructive to our state’s economy,” said Tenney. “Even without some of his more destructive policy ideas enacted, our state is already exhibiting an unacceptable rate of economic growth.

“Democrats at the state and federal level have been quick to place blame on the recession, but since that time other states such as Florida have seen job growth balloon to over a million new jobs,” Tenney said. “The reason is simple: those states have introduced economically proven policies. We must do the same and make it easier for small businesses and farms, the backbone of our economy’s hiring, to expand and employ more individuals.”The personal income tax reduction legislation I have introduced in the Assembly is the center piece of economic growth strategies throughout the nation. Policies like these will provide greater resources to our infrastructure and schools and clear a pathway to a more prosperous future for the people of New York.”
