19croppedadjustedRoberts Street Elementary School held a Lunch Hero presentation today. Presentations were held at Peterboro Street and Roberts Street Elementary Schools. The kitchen staff and lunchroom staff all received specially decorated aprons in the respective school assemblies, and the Roberts Street kids read a special poem in their honor.

There also were posters and artwork thanking and honoring our School Lunch Heroes posted on the walls inside and outside the cafeteria. Pictured with the adults are from the Roberts Street Elementary School Government Club, who decorated the apron gifts presented at that event.

The Canastota Central School District held these events to honor and thank kitchen staff and lunchroom aides as part of “School Lunch Hero Day.” According to the School Nutrition Association on their website (schoolnutrition.org), the first Friday in May is designated as School Lunch Hero Day to highlight the ways in which school nutrition professionals make a difference for every child who comes through the cafeteria; it is inspired by the “Lunch Lady” comic books by author Jarrett J. Krosoczka, where the protagonist is a lunch lady superhero, based on the author’s own real-life experiences with school lunch ladies.
