On May 13, at 9:26 p.m., the New York State Police responded to a car – pedestrian motor vehicle collision that occurred in front of the Brewerton Speedway located at 60 US RT 11 in Hastings.
The investigation revealed that George Lopes, 74, of Central Square, was walking across the street when he stepped into the southbound lane in front of a vehicle. The operator of the vehicle, Kaitlin Johnson, 19, of Central Square, attempted to swerve away but was unable to avoid striking Lopes with her vehicle.
Lopes was transported by Brewerton Ambulance to SUNY Upstate Medical University Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Johnson was found to have a suspended driver license and was processed for third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor at the scene.
