Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program helps meet needs of first responders, EMS professionals
U.S. Representative Richard Hanna today announced that a Madison County fire department received federal funding that will help its firefighters have the tools necessary to keep the public safe.
The Canastota Fire Department received $868,143 in federal grant funding for Fiscal Year 2015 through the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFG). The grant is designated for Vehicle Acquisition and will be used to replace the department’s 37-year-old aerial ladder vehicle.
The primary goal of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations. Since 2001, AFG has helped firefighters and other first responders obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources needed to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.
The program is administered by the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration.
