Congressional candidate Kim Myers, flanked by area veterans, including Utica City Councilmen Jack LoMedico and Bill Phillips, unveiled her agenda to support Upstate New York veterans today in Oneida County. Myers talked about her plan, “Taking Care of Veterans,” while standing in front of a historic B-52 Bomber at Griffiss Business and Technology Park in Rome.
“Veterans deserve far more than our respect and gratitude – I’ll go to Congress to make sure the promises we made to our veterans get fulfilled and we roll out the red carpet to welcome them back to civilian life,” Myers said.
Myers believes our government must do more to support our veterans for risking their lives to preserve our freedom. Her plan focuses on easing the transition back to civilian life, both economically and medically, supporting military families, and increasing access to quality health care.
“I’ll work to help veterans get back on their feet and into a job when they return, not put up roadblocks to their success. I’ll step up to increase access to care, especially mental health services, to help stop the scourge of veteran suicide. I’ll hold the leaders at the VA accountable, and if they don’t step up immediately, we’ll ask the private sector to jump in,” said Myers.
Councilman LoMedico, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army Reserves, commended Myers for her outreach and her plans, saying “Kim’s thorough plan tells me she has the interests of veterans at heart, and she’ll fight every day for us. Especially her pledge to protect every penny of veterans’ pensions from Congressional cuts. She knows that veterans rely on those pensions, and she won’t let Washington take that away from us.”
Myers concluded by thanking both the veterans in attendance and all who serve their country, past and future, and pledging to always carry the voices of the community to Washington to improve their lives.
“In Congress, I will keep a Veterans Advisory Council in the district to advise me on the issues veterans are facing in the district and handle military academy recommendations,” said Myers. “I will also have a full-time staffer committed to veteran outreach, much like Congressman Hanna did, so that we can make sure all veterans know that they’ll be heard. These brave Americans were willing to pay the ultimate price for our freedom. We have to work harder for them after they’ve served us.”
