Residents dropped off more than 106 pounds of medication at the Madison County Solid Waste Department’s semi-annual Pill Drop and Shredding event Sept. 23.

Of that, 3.7 pounds of controlled substances were collected. That translates to about 162,800 pills (50mg each) that won’t be used illegally. The medication was collected by the Madison County Department of Solid Waste, the Madison County Sheriff’s Department and BRiDGES/MCCASA for proper disposal and destruction.

Fifty-seven households cleared out excess medication during the event. County residents who missed the event can still drop off unused or outdated medication at a kiosk located in the Department of Motor Vehicles, 138 N. Court St., Wampsville, during regular business hours.

Although no “sharps” (needles, syringes or lancets) were collected, the county gave away about 50 red containers to residents. Containers are also available at pharmacies and the county landfill office.

The county provided free document shredding to more than 100 households at the same event. More than 6,300 pounds of paper were shredded and recycled.
