Move comes following meeting with constituents who say frequent rate hikes from Spectrum must stop
Brindisi: Spectrum owner Charter Communications recently revealed a huge drop in its cable subscribers—maybe it’s time they see the writing on the wall
Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi today announced he has started an online petition drive asking the New York State Public Service Commission and the Federal Trade Commission to investigate frequent rate hikes by Spectrum owner Charter Communications in recent months.
The petition follows a meeting Brindisi held with constituents in Rome last week—many of whom said their cable and Internet rates have been steadily increasing since Spectrum took over for Time-Warner Cable two years ago.
“I heard from a number of people, both at the meeting I held and afterwards who are looking at cable rates that have almost doubled over the past year or two. Many of these customers simply cannot afford a rate increase of that amount, and through this petition, I am giving them the chance to weigh in with state and federal officials who can hopefully do something about this issue,” Brindisi said.
Brindisi said Charter Communications revealed last week that it has lost more than 122,000 of its video subscribers in the first quarter of 2018, which resulted in a 12-percent drop in its stock price by the end of the day.
“Many Spectrum customers are finding other alternatives and cancelling service, so maybe it’s time the company sees the writing on the wall. Unfortunately, many seniors have told me they don’t want to watch television on their computer, or get a satellite dish. I am hoping that if enough people sign this petition, Spectrum will have to stop their unreasonable practices,” Brindisi said.
Brindisi says petitions will be sent to the PSC and the FTC. To sign the petition, visit http://nyassembly.gov/mem/Anthony-Brindisi/story/81135
