TOMORROW: Carol Cotten to lead Memory Sketchbook workshop at the OPL

Artist and teacher Carol Cotten returns to Oneida Public Library in August to conduct a distinctively different kind of art class for adults called The Memory Sketchbook: A Workshop in Words and Mixed Media, starting Wednesday, Aug. 1, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., and continuing on Wednesdays in August at the same time.

Cotten will start each of the five weekly sessions by demonstrating “mind-mapping,” which associates a memory with an image, and then putting that memory down on paper in the form of appropriate words plus an evocative image sketched in pencil, pen and ink, watercolors, pastels or acrylics. The students will follow with their own experiments in mind-mapping and sketching in a medium of their own choosing.

The Memory Sketchbook workshop is free and open to all aspiring adult artists, whether novice or expert. Registration at the library beforehand, however, is required because the workshop is limited to 22 participants. Students will be expected to provide their own spiral-bound sketchbook, pencil, eraser and basic art supplies.

Cotten, who retired from teaching art in the Camden Central School District in 2004, has been conducting art workshops for children and adults at the OPL since 2005. She has exhibited her own art, especially her watercolors, at many small regional galleries and libraries, including the OPL.

Interested adults must register at the Oneida Library, 220 Broad St., for the class or by calling the library at (315) 363-3050.
