Madison County Historian Matthew Urtz

Matt Urtz for web(Cazenovia, NY – Oct. 2014) At 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, the Cazenovia Public Library once again welcomes Matthew Urtz, Madison County historian, who will present “Mills along Chittenango Creek Prior to the 20th Century.”

All are invited to join him in the Community Room and enjoy an enlightening discussion about one of the most important waterways in the early development of Madison County. Featured will be many photos and stories of the mills that once called the Creek home.

Urtz was appointed Madison County historian in April 2010. He serves on the Cabinet of Freedom for the National Abolitionist Hall of Fame and Museum and on the Archives Committee for the Central New York Library Resource Council. He is also a board member and regional coordinator for the Association of Public Historians in New York state.

In October 2013, Urtz started a project to record the stories of World War II Veterans from Madison County. To date, the stories of seven veterans have been recorded with more to come. The goal is to have the recordings available at local libraries and at the Madison County Historical Society.
