(Hamilton, NY- May 2015) Chartered in 1904, the Hamilton Public Library is located in a building originally constructed in 1830. Over the past 185 years, the Library has received no less than four additions to the original building. Being a Municipal Library, the building and grounds are owned by the Village of Hamilton. As with any property, as time goes on structural and cosmetic updates are needed to maintain the integrity of the facility.

The Village of Hamilton has many properties to maintain and important projects for which they must allocate and divide the community funding entrusted to them. The Library was in a unique position to seek construction funding through the New York State Library Construction Grant program—an opportunity specifically designed to help communities more feasibly address their Library construction needs, and made available only to Libraries directly.

The Hamilton Public Library sought funding through this grant opportunity and we are very pleased to have been able to secure $28,201 through our grant award as a generous contribution to help the Village accomplish much needed structural repairs and improvements to the Library building.

What construction needs are being addressed? This winter, handicapped-accessible touch pads were added to our interior and exterior entrances at the back of the building. With the return of warmer weather, over the next several weeks, one of the roofs will be replaced and the building exterior of the old wing will be repainted. These improvements will help the Hamilton Public Library continue to improve access to our materials and collections, provide a greater level of safety for our staff and patrons, and maintain the overall structural integrity of this facility.

We are so very appreciative for our New York State Library Construction Grant award, and for the commitment and support of the Village of Hamilton, through which these construction initiatives are made possible, and by which we will continue to maintain effective Library service to the community.
