(Hamilton, NY – Jan. 2013) The Colgate Bookstore and Hamilton Theater announce the Winter 2013 season of the Hamilton Book & Movie Club, beginning Thursday, Jan. 31, at 5:30 p.m. The theme of the season is “No-Nonsense Heroines” featuring books and movies about physically and mentally strong women who are often very different from their peers. The selected book-movie pairs for this season are as follows:
Jan. 31: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, novel by Stieg Larsson; 2009 movie (Swedish with English subtitles) starring Noomi Rapace. Mikael Blomkvist, a crusading journalist recently trapped by a libel conviction, is hired to investigate the disappearance of a young woman from a wealthy family who went missing more than 40 years in the past. Mikael is assisted in his search by a contemporary young woman – the gifted but troubled Lisbeth Salander.
Feb. 28: Temple Grandin, based on the memoir Thinking in Pictures; 2010 movie starring Claire Danes. A true story about a woman diagnosed with autism at age 2. With the help of family, a caring educator and self-advocacy, Temple overcomes many difficulties to become a professor and ground-breaking animal scientist in the livestock industry, as well as an autism advocate and activist.
March 28: The Hunger Games, novel by Suzanne Collins; 2012 movie starring Jennifer Lawrence. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen lives with her mother and younger sister in District 12 of the post-apocalyptic nation of Panem. Her life changes when she becomes a tribute from her district in the Hunger Games: a national, televised fight to the death between two dozen boys and girls (one of each from the nation’s 12 districts).
