(Utica, NY – Feb. 2013) On Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m. the Utica Public Library kicks off Black History Month with a screening of the “granddaddy of Blaxploitation classics,” the 1971 crime drama “Shaft.”  The fast paced film made a star of Richard Roundtree and helped create the mold for the African American action/crime film hero.

Benefiting from a famous title song by Isaac Hayes, the story involves a private detective who is trying to locate the missing daughter of a gangster.  The film is rated R and is free to the public.

The library will also spotlight Toni Morrison in their annual lobby display and patrons may enter a drawing to win a free copy of her classic bestseller, The Bluest Eye.

For more information, contact the library at 735-2279.
