(Oriskany, NY – Feb. 2013) Planning for the 17th Annual Herb & Flower Festival is well underway.

This Festival is an educational opportunity to learn about gardening sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County Master Gardener Volunteers.

The event will be held on Saturday, June 22 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Extension’s Parker F. Scripture Botanical Gardens located at the Oneida County Farm & Home Center off of Judd Road on Second Street, Oriskany.

Featured are six free classes on various gardening/ landscaping topics and a Keynote address about Beneficial Insects by Jason Dombrowski, PhD, Cornell University Entomologist.

Between 40 and 50 plant merchants and gardening vendors will participate in the Festival.  The wide variety of plants and information from the various vendors and the Master Gardeners enhance gardening education.

The Parker F. Scripture Botanical Gardens are teaching gardens featuring a Butterfly house and related Butterfly teaching gardens, an All American Selections Gardens, Backyard Teaching Garden and a mile-long Nature Trail through the adjacent woods and marsh area.  Two on-site observation bee hives are located in the Parker F. Scripture Botanical Garden, including one that allows views into the interworking of the hive.  Bee Keepers are on-site to provide further information and to offer honey tasting.

The All American Selections garden as well as the Herb, Bulb, Vegetable, the Cottage Garden and other gardens include botanical labeling of plants to offer the opportunity to meet new plants and learn what they are called to acquire a similar plant at the Vendors or local garden stores.  Last year, the All American Selection Gardens at the Parker F. Scripture Gardens won third place in a National Contest of the United States All American Selection Gardens.

There is a nominal $3 donation to attend the event, which helps to offset the maintenance and improvement of the Parker F. Scripture Gardens.

  1. We would like information about vending at your event. We import handmade hand painted Spanish pottery, with a heavy concentration on food grating plate. We do a lowkey, informative demonstration, because it’s not a recognized kitchen gadget. It might seem like an unlikely product at your event, but we’ve done a lot of herb and garden shows, and it’s been very well received. Probably, it’s because of the way the plate grates garlic. It turns the garlic into a paste.
The website should answer any questions, but you can always call us.
